A Mage's stats are based on their elemental powers and their level. As they level up, they can learn new spells that they can use to attack or defend. They can also learn new ways to use their element. Eventually they can also bond with a familiar.
Mages can mix elements to do other things, but that hasn't been researched very much yet. Surprise us!
As far as researchers know, which element a mage gets is completely random.

Fire
Starting stats:
MP: 3
HP: 5
DEF: 1
SPD: 1
ATK: 5
Raw fire is the most destructive of the elements. Those with it tend to start off with a lot of power and very little control. It takes a lot of work and practice to get fire under control, but once that is achieved, the mage will be able to do great things with their gift. Some things that can be done by a fire mage are the manipulation of fire, the creation of fire, the manipulation of heat, the manipulation of rage, and the manipulation of fear. They are strongest against shadow and earth. They work best with light and air. They are weakest against water.
Water
Starting stats:
MP: 4
HP: 6
DEF: 2
SPD: 1
ATK: 3
Water is one of the most underestimated of the elements. Those with it have great potential, but they must unlock it by learning how to use it. Using the water element takes a lot of focus, control, and patience, but those who are masters at it have amazing powers on a scale matched by few others. Some things that can be done by a water mage are the manipulation of water, the manipulation of blood and other body fluids, the manipulation of pools of water to communicate or view things from great distances. Their magic can also be used to heal some injuries, provided the victim is covered in water. They are strongest against fire. They work best with air and light. They are weakest against earth and shadow.
Earth
Starting stats:
MP: 3
HP: 6
DEF: 3
SPD: 1
ATK: 3
Earth is a sturdy, sure element that is slow to develop. With patience and constant work, an earth mage can use their magic to work wonders. Some things that can be done by an earth mage are the manipulation of plants, the manipulation of earth, the manipulation of rocks, and the manipulation of calm. Earth mages can also draw strength from the earth, leading to not only higher strength but also greater endurance. They are strongest against water and light. They work best with shadow. They are weakest against fire and air.
Air
Starting stats:
MP: 5
HP: 4
DEF: 2
SPD: 2
ATK: 2
Air is a light, free element that is not easily controlled, for it likes to slip out of the grasps of its wielders and be free again. However, those who can harness it or learn to move with it will greatly benefit from its powers. Some things that can be done by an air mage are the manipulation of air and the manipulation of excitement. However, their manipulation of air can be used to control wind and allow them to fly. They can also use the air to allow them to run and move faster. They are strongest against earth. They work best with fire and water. They are weakest against light and shadow.
Light
MP: 4
HP: 5
DEF: 3
SPD: 1
ATK: 2
Some people assume that only those with pure hearts can control light. This is not entirely true. Those with the element of light are not always good people. Light mages have been gifted with the abilities to manipulate and create light, to sense truth, to locate things they are searching for, and to create illusions by bending light. They can draw energy from any kind of light. They are strongest against shadow and air. They work best with fire and water. They are weakest against earth.
Shadow
MP: 4
HP: 5
DEF: 2
SPD: 1
ATK: 3
Just like not all light mages are good, most shadow mages are not evil. While some are not good, many are not evil. Those with the element of shadow can manipulate shadows, hide in plain sight by standing in shadow, create illusions in darkness, and to sense lies. They can draw energy from shadows and darkness. They are strongest against water and air. They work best with earth. They are weakest against light and fire.
