The people of Oneia came to the continent all at once, through one large event called the Migration. Before then, there were no humans there.
Not much is known about what life was like before the Migration, as all of the people who came through the portal are now dead and most of their written works did not come through the portal with them. But there are stories. The stories say that everyone came from a planet called Earth (or other names, depending on the language of the storyteller) that was about to be destroyed by the chemical aftereffects of a war.. Their researchers discovered a way to send people somewhere else, a place they said was similar to their home planet. Nobody had been there before, but it was the only chance to escape. Abandoning all they had, people and animals from every nation and background fled through the portal. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of the people and creatures who went through the portal actually made it through and arrived in Oneia.
Those people quickly had to learn to work together. The animals had fled into the empty forests, mountains, and seas and were quick to start anew, but the people had to build shelters and find food. Intermarriage between different races was common, and most laws governing relationships were thrown out in this new world where nothing was certain. Languages and cultures blended. Today, some families hold more of their ancestors' Earth culture than others, and they all speak a common language with a few other languages mixed in here and there.
About 300 years ago, humans arrived to this world. There were only about 200 of them total, and they had come to Oneia through some kind of technological means, technology that was lost after that point. Whatever the case was, their world had been destroyed, and they were forced to come here. Historians call this event The Migration.
The first century was focused on survival. About a third of the people died in the first few months due to lack of shelter and food. Soon, though, homes were being built, and the people were learning what they could use for food. Some set off on their own or in small groups, but most of the people stayed together. They got along for the most part. Though they had spoken many different languages before, they came up with a developing common language that was spoken and written. Laws started as basic moral codes, then developed depending on needs. The most capable of their leaders ran things, and the people made sure that they weren't being mistreated. They learned how to do things better, and those who had known skills from their old world adapted them and used them in this new world, which they called Oneia because they were all one people.
The first generation died, and the second generation came. The people hadn't really begun to notice it yet, but they had become more attuned to the world around them. They had more endurance and could sense things better, with better hearing, sight, and smell. They could think faster and remember more. Historians have recently discovered this through written accounts by the people. That was when they started calling themselves Citizens. They split more, forming towns and cities and beginning to mine in the mountains. This was one of the times of the most development. This was also when they came in contact with the Druids, though the more secretive people stayed away from exploring Citizens for the most part.
The third generation were the first to be born with magic. At first, the parents were afraid. Their children had turned 15 and suddenly gained fantastical powers. Chaos erupted when the teenagers couldn't control it. For years, young Citizens were taught to restrict their gifts as much as possible so they couldn't harm anyone. Finally, a breakthrough was made. Mila Valenceau and the smartest minds in Oneia gathered together to try to unlock the secrets of magic. They succeeded, paving the way for more breakthroughs and inventions. They also proved that magic could be controlled, and created a school to teach others how to control it.
In the fourth generation, Arcana crystals were discovered. Inventors started to implement them into technology. There was a major technology boom as different uses were discovered for them.
Recently, territory struggles with the Druids have grown more frequent. Though, so has trade and intermingling between Citizens and Druids. It's possible that the two will learn how to get along.
Due to so much intermarriage between racial and cultural groups from Earth, and mostly from the influence of Oneia's magic, people's appearances have changed with every generation. Most people still look about the same as people from Earth did, but a few things have changed in the last couple of generations. Hair color can be any color of the rainbow nowadays, and even parents with the same hair color are never sure if that will be the color of their child's hair. Siblings' hair can look completely different. The same is true for eye color. That's about all of the changes the Citizens have gone through appearance-wise.
The third generation's coming brought with it chaos. That generation had more stillborn children than the one before it, and the ones that survived their first 15 years of life were discovered to have magic. Many believe it was unlocked in their genetics by the environment of Oneia. Magic started off subtly, like being able to light candles or even just create light. Some could see things in water, make plants grow faster, start a breeze, or hide themselves in shadows. But as they grew older, they became more powerful. Many lost control of their powers and harmed or killed by accident, often becoming their own victims. Their parents feared them, and some talked about banishing or killing them, but every child had magic. Removing them would cause humans to die out.
Then Mila Valenceau, one of the most brilliant thinkers and one of the oldest of the third generation, gathered together all of the smartest and wisest of the people. Together, they worked to unlock the secrets of magic. They succeeded. This breakthrough brought more magical developments and the ability to control magic, and it prompted the building of Valenceau.
Since the start of the third generation, nothing has really changed magic-wise. Children are still being born with magic, and they're still being sent off to school as soon as their powers manifest. But things might change now that the Druids are starting to mingle a little more with the Citizens.
Oneia has different social classes, and they're mostly based on wealth, occupations, and living situations.
The lowest class are the criminals. These people have broken the law. Those who have only committed minor crimes are forced to become workers and are taxed about 5% of their income to go towards their city or town. Depending on their crime, they are tolerated. Those who have committed worse crimes are banned from every civilized area occupied by Citizens. They are not allowed to own property. They are shunned by all other Citizens.
Just above the criminals are those whose businesses are not quite illegal (but almost are). Those who sell things they probably shouldn't are in this category. So are people who take advantage of others and prostitutes. They are generally disliked by those with a good reputation.
Next are the unemployed. Those who can work are heavily encouraged to find a job, as otherwise they will not receive any money at all. They are scorned by other working Citizens, especially if they don't even try to find work.
The handicapped are a different story. Those too old, too young, or physically unable to work are cared for by their families, and they get a small amount of money from their nearest city or town to help provide for their needs. They are liked by the community they live in, especially children.
Next are the workers. They work in the mines, on the farms, on fishing boats, in civil jobs, and in factories. They're generally respected by the other classes for the hard work that they do, but their jobs don't pay much, even now that magic is making their jobs even easier. They have enough money to build or buy a house, a farm, food, and other necessities, but probably not enough to afford luxuries.
Next are the merchants and traders. They make a living by buying items from one region and selling them in another. They aren't as well liked as the small business owners, partly because they don't stay in one place long enough to build many good relationships and partly because they make a living off of other people's products. They are a little wealthier generally than small business owners though.
The next class are the small business owners. They usually make enough to have a few luxuries as well as the necessities, and they are generally well liked as long as they are fair to customers.
Next come the wealthy. This is anyone whose family has good social standing and has enough money for pretty much any luxury. Usually this is gained through having a business that has done particularly well, or by investing in some smaller businesses for part of their profit. These people are generally respected as long as they've been honest in getting their wealth.
Almost at the top are the magic researchers and professors at Valenceau. To work there, they have to be intelligent, fair, kind, and well-liked by those they know. The head staff takes their attributes and reputations into account when deciding whether they can work at the school or not.
The ones who are really respected are the city and town officials. They enforce and make the laws in each city and town. Every few years, every person who legally lives in a city or town, has committed no major crimes, and has graduated from Valenceau has the opportunity to vote for a Mayor who run the cities and towns. Usually they pick the same person, as there's no term limit. The Mayors choose and pay the firefighters, healers, and police, who are liked just as much.
Then there are the ones who are well liked and respected by almost every Citizen in Oneia. They are the head staff at Valenceau. When a Citizen is offered the chance to be part of Valenceau's head staff, a majority vote of no from even one of the towns or cities is enough to have them out of the running. This is part of the reason why Valenceau has so few head staff. Having the respect and trust of all of the citizens is also important because the head staff does not only oversee the school, they oversee Oneia.
Familial Structures
Family in this society is an adaptable term. The most commonly used and accepted meaning is a mother and father who live in a house together with their children. However, it can also be expanded to mean a group of two or more people who consider each other family. Legally, a family is a group of two or more people who live together. This can be true whether it's a couple, parents and children, a group of very close friends, a larger group with more distant relatives living together, or a combination of any of these. In a family, all members are loved and cherished, especially children.
Political Structure
Oneia's cities and towns are run by Mayors who are elected by the people. They mostly have the final authority over the area they govern.
However, sometimes there comes a problem so big that it encompasses several different places or even the entire continent. That's when the Valenceau head staff are called in. As the brightest, most just, most powerful, and most respected people of Oneia, they have the authority to make decisions together that encompass the whole continent. This was started because of Mila Valenceau and her colleagues, but the system worked, so it continues. When coming to a decision, over two thirds of the group must vote the same way to bring that decision into effect. They are also the highest judicial system, with the Mayors making those decisions in other cases.
Druids
Citizens differ on their opinions of the Druids. Some hate them. Some like them. Some think they're weak. Some are scared of their powers. Generally, a Citizen's opinion of their Druidic neighbors is one of distrust. Druids are not allowed to vote in Civilian affairs. Nor may they attend Valenceau, as they have no elemental magic. They are allowed to marry Civilians, live in towns and cities, work in civilized places, and have children with Civilians as long as they follow the laws of the city or town they live in. Most have not taken advantage of these privileges, preferring to live within their own villages and away from Civilians.
There is no set religion of Oneia. Many people believe many different things, and a person's beliefs are mostly focused on his or her heritage. Most religions have passed down through families or social groups.
Many of the Citizens believe in something or other that guides and shapes people's fates. They believe it is why they were brought to Oneia during the Migration instead of wherever the many others went. They believe it is why they have survived so long in a strange land. They have different ideas on what or who this guiding force is, but many seek to please it in some form or fashion, with good deeds or with offerings.
Others worship magic. They believe that it is the life force that keeps Oneia and themselves alive. It is beyond their understanding, so they respect and worship it. Some believe it is even sentient. Even others just worship nature. Some worship their dead ancestors, believing that their spirits will aid the living if respected. And some worship nothing at all.
Most of the food is hunted, fished, farmed, or gathered. The people are still focused on creating food or finding food, so hunters, fishers, and farmers usually find as much as they can and sell much of it to merchants for a great profit. Cooked food is preferred over raw, and Citizens have learned to combine foods into tasty dishes that are fairly easy to prepare. One is soup, for instance. They still have a long way to go flavor-wise and recipe-wise, especially since wheat is not a crop that is widely grown.
The drink is usually water, gathered from freshwater lakes or rivers. Some get it from the ocean and purify it. Most cities and villages are close to one or more of the three water sources. Fruits are sometimes squeezed to get the juices out, but that's mostly for flavor, as fruits are too valuable to be used for straight fruit juice.
People mostly spend their days working. What do they do when they have some time to themselves? How do the children play?
Adults usually spend many hours a day hard at work, and they're exhausted when they get home. They don't usually have much time for fun. Some spend their free time advancing their magic and making art with it. Some play with their familiars or talk with their families. Others read for fun. Everyone who goes to Valenceau is taught how to read, so everyone has a basic understanding of the written word. Some sew or cook. Some hunt, although that's also a necessity. Gardening is the same way.
In cities and towns, music and dancing are quite popular. Musicians are well paid and a joy to listen to, especially singers. Most parties and social events held will involve some kind of dancing. In civilized areas, parties with food and music are held often to celebrate things like weddings or births, and they're a good way to bond socially and enjoy life.
In the mountains, sledding is a popular pastime. So is having snowball fights, making ice sculptures and forts, and skating on frozen lakes.
In the forests, many people climb trees for fun. Rope swings are fun until you hit a tree. Whittling is very popular here.
On the beaches, children are taught to swim from an early age and are almost never out of the water. Making sand castles and collecting shells are popular pastimes here. Others go boating.
Others have fun in more adult ways. Gambling is big in many villages and cities. So is prostitution and getting drunk. Authorities are usually close by bigger gatherings to make sure things don't get out of hand.
The most advanced form of technology in recorded history was the portal. However, it has never been replicated, and for now that technology is gone. All the people have is what they have managed to make themselves, though some of it has been based off of things that existed before the Migration.
Steel and wood are what make up most of the inventions. Wheels have made carts very popular, especially for moving goods. Water wheels and windmills provide some energy. Musical instruments are usually made of metals or wood, or sometimes both. Paper has been invented, and ink is usually used with sticks or bird feathers to write.
Ovens and refrigerators are made with a combination of magic and technology. Food is placed on metal racks in a small pit. The pit is surrounded by rock for ovens and metal for refrigerators. Then a fire is started or ice is placed in the very bottom, and then the pit is covered by a large, flat slab of rock. For ovens, air holes are chiseled into it to pull in oxygen for the fire. A good fire or water mage can keep a fire going or the ice cold for a few days with almost no attention.
Before magic, rocks were mined from quarries and used for many purposes, including building. Now earth magic has made the shaping of rocks much easier. Stone or timber is used to build many of the buildings. Glass has also become a major thing in cities and towns.
Other forms of technology are also common, and some are being invented.
One of the most important forms of technology are the Arcana crystals. Mages focus their magical energies on the crystals to charge them. Then they or other mages can release that elemental energy all at once or a little at a time to use those powers, even if they can't control the element. Druids cannot use them, probably because their magic is different. The amount of energy stored depends on the size of the crystal, and putting too much energy into one will cause it to explode and release the energy in one big burst.
